About this place

Commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1639 as the palace fort of his new capital Shahjahanabad, the Red Fort takes its name from the towering red sandstone walls that enclose its 254-acre complex. Highlights include the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), Diwan-i-Khas, the Moti Masjid and the Naubat Khana drum house. India's Prime Minister hoists the national flag here every Independence Day.
