About this place
Built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III as a charity project during a Pune famine, this five-acre Italianate palace later became famous as the place where Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba and his secretary Mahadev Desai were interned by the British from 1942 to 1944 following the Quit India movement. Kasturba and Mahadev Desai both died here; their memorials are in the gardens. Donated to India by the Aga Khan in 1969.
