Golconda Fort
Khair Complex, Ibrahim Bagh, Hyderabad, Telangana
About this place
Originally a mud fort built by the Kakatiyas in the 11th century and rebuilt as a granite citadel by the Qutb Shahi dynasty in the 16th, Golconda was one of the great diamond markets of the medieval world — the Koh-i-Noor, Hope and Regent diamonds all passed through here. Cleverly designed acoustics carry a clap from the entrance gate to the Bala Hissar 1 km away. Try to catch the evening sound-and-light show.

Frequently asked
When is the fort open?
Open daily 9 am to 5:30 pm. The English sound-and-light show runs in the evening — 6:30 pm in winter and 7 pm in summer, weather permitting.
How much does it cost?
Around ₹25 for Indian citizens and ₹300 for foreigners to enter the fort. The sound-and-light show is a separate ticket of around ₹140.
How do I reach Golconda?
About 11 km west of central Hyderabad. Buses 65G and 66G run from Mehdipatnam; the closest metro is Asif Nagar but you'll need an auto from there.
Is the climb to the top hard?
There are about 400 steps to the Bala Hissar (top pavilion). Allow 90 minutes for the climb and exploration. Carry water; some segments have no shade.
Is photography allowed?
Yes throughout the fort. Drones require prior permission. The acoustic clap point near the entrance is a fun video demonstration.
