About this place

Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the Hawa Mahal — Palace of Winds — is the iconic five-storey facade of pink sandstone that defines Jaipur's old-city skyline. Its 953 tiny latticed jharokha windows were designed to let royal women observe street festivals while remaining unseen. The breeze through the lattice gives the building its name.

Frequently asked

When is Hawa Mahal open?
Open daily 9 am to 4:30 pm, including weekends.
What is the entry fee?
Around ₹50 for Indian citizens and ₹200 for foreigners. The composite Jaipur pass that includes multiple monuments is the cheapest option for full-day sightseeing.
Can I go inside?
Yes — most visitors only photograph the facade from the street, but the entrance is from the rear lane and the upper-storey jharokhas offer wonderful views of Sireh Deori bazaar.
How do I get there?
Hawa Mahal is in the heart of the Pink City old town. Park at Badi Choupad and walk; the nearest metro is Chandpole on the Pink Line, about 1.5 km away.
When should I photograph the facade?
Sunrise, between 7 and 8 am, when the morning sun lights up the eastern facade. The terrace of the rooftop cafés directly opposite gives the best vantage.
