About this place

Founded in 1814 by the Asiatic Society of Bengal, the Indian Museum is the ninth-oldest museum in the world and the largest in India. Its 60 galleries hold an extraordinary range of material: the railings of the 2nd-century BCE Bharhut Stupa, the Ashokan lion capital fragments, a complete Egyptian mummy, dinosaur fossils, Mughal miniatures and a vast botanical and zoological collection.
