About this place

Built around the personal collection of Mir Yousuf Ali Khan (Salar Jung III), Prime Minister of the Nizam of Hyderabad, this museum holds over 1.1 million objects in 38 galleries — from Aurangzeb's sword and Tipu Sultan's wardrobe to the 19th-century Veiled Rebecca marble and an enormous musical clock that draws crowds on the hour. One of the largest one-man collections of art in the world.

What are the timings?
Open 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday to Thursday. Closed Fridays and public holidays. Last entry at 4:15 pm.
What does entry cost?
Around ₹50 for Indian citizens and ₹500 for foreigners. Children under 12 enter free with a guardian. The audio guide is a small extra charge.
Where exactly is the museum?
On the south bank of the Musi river in Darulshifa, about 1.5 km south of the Charminar. Auto-rickshaws from any central point reach it in 15–20 minutes.
Are cameras allowed?
Mobile-phone photography (no flash) is allowed in most galleries. Cameras and tripods require a permit at the entrance; flash is prohibited everywhere.
What shouldn't I miss?
The musical clock (every hour, on the hour), the Veiled Rebecca marble, Aurangzeb's sword, the Mughal miniatures and the European bronze gallery. Plan at least 3 hours.
