Sinhagad Fort base (Atkarwadi village)
Atkarwadi, Sinhagad Road, Pune, Maharashtra
About this place
A 760-metre hill fort 30 km southwest of Pune, Sinhagad ('Lion's Fort') is famous as the site of Tanaji Malusare's 1670 night assault that retook the fort for Shivaji from the Mughals — Tanaji died at the gate that now bears his name. This half-day trek covers the steep 2 km path up from Atkarwadi village, the Tanaji and Rajaram memorials at the summit, and the legendary kanda bhaji and pithla bhakri at the top stalls.

When does the trek start?

Can I drive up instead?
Yes — a motorable road leads almost to the summit. Many locals drive up for breakfast on weekends, but the trek route via the Atkarwadi path is the historic Tanaji approach and far more rewarding.
What should I carry?
Trekking shoes, at least 1 L water per person, energy bars, a windcheater (the summit can be 5–8 °C cooler), sunscreen and a torch in the monsoon when fog rolls in early.
What's at the top?
Tanaji Malusare's and Rajaram Maharaj's samadhis, the Devtake water tank, ancient temples, and food stalls famous for pithla bhakri, kanda bhaji and tak (buttermilk).
