About this place

Conceived by Lord Curzon and built between 1906 and 1921 to commemorate Queen Victoria, the Victoria Memorial is an enormous white Makrana marble building set in 64 acres of gardens at the southern end of the Maidan. Its 25 galleries trace the history of the British Raj and Bengal through paintings, manuscripts and royal artefacts — including the throne of Tipu Sultan and Sir Stamford Raffles' personal collection.
